Common Questions About Hormesis

By

Alex Tyson

We’ve seen a dramatic increase in the number of people wanting to know about hormesis and its health & wellbeing benefits. As Australia’s leading hormetic tech company this is of course something we get asked about a lot. We are here to fill you in on all things hormesis!

The top three most common questions we get asked:

  • How do you induce hormesis?
  • What is an example of hormesis?
  • What are the best forms of hormesis?

Found—Space is a hormetic tech company specialising in equipment designed specifically to induce a hormetic stress response (known as hormesis). Hormetic tech (like our range of ice baths and saunas) is designed to induce beneficial stressors in a controlled and safe manner – and we’re delighted to now offer both of these across Australia and New Zealand. If you’re keen to know more about hormesis and the benefits it can bring, read on!

How Do You Induce Hormesis?

Hormesis is induced by exposing your body to certain types of stressors, at the right amount which then activates protection mechanisms or survival systems in the body that enhance strength & resilience – both physically and mentally. There are different ways you can induce hormetic stress such as through heat, cold, exercise & fasting.

Recently, the rise in awareness and take up of hormetic therapies has led to the development of hormetic technologies – equipment designed specifically to induce a hormetic stress response by using physical stimulus to induce these beneficial stressors in a controlled and safe manner. By doing this regularly, we can activate a range of beneficial physiological cascades that continually improve our health and resilience.

What Is An Example Of Hormesis?

As mentioned above, one example of hormesis is exposing your body to extreme temperatures. As a hormetic tech company, we design, develop and sell the two most efficient forms of targeting this mechanism – infrared saunas and ice baths. So it’s fair to say this is an area we’re pretty familiar with (and passionate about!)

When we expose our bodies to either hot or cold temperature extremes this triggers several different beneficial responses including heat shock proteins (sauna) and cold shock proteins (ice bath).

Hormetic health benefits you can achieve with a sauna include:

  • Increasing longevity
  • More youthful-looking skin
  • Improved cardiovascular fitness, circulation and cellular health
  • Improved circulation
  • Improved physical performance and endurance
  • Reduced inflammation, pain and swelling (speeds up the body’s recovery process after physical exertion/exercise)
  • Better sleep

Hormetic health benefits from ice baths can include:

  • Improved endurance and cardiovascular health
  • Improved cognitive function, resilience, focus, clarity and concentration
  • Better tolerance to stressful situations
  • Quicker recovery time and reduced muscle soreness
  • Possible immune system benefits

What Are The Best Forms Of Hormesis?

Both ice baths and saunas are excellent forms of inducing hormesis on their own, though perhaps the most effective hormetic therapy is combining the two. This not only means you have a broader spectrum of outcomes but it can enhance their benefits further.

Hot/cold therapy (as it’s often referred to) can trigger lymphatic circulation (which helps to flush out infections) and lymphatic drainage (which removes certain forms of swelling) additionally, this can also trigger your body to release endorphins & adrenaline.
