Consulting A Doctor Before Saunas

By: Alex Tyson

Infrared saunas are a great way to relax and used regularly, they can offer many health & wellbeing benefits but not everyone should use an infrared sauna. Below find out who should consult a doctor before infrared saunas along with who can and can’t use them.

Found—Space has been supplying top quality saunas to Australians since 2008, making us Australia’s longest-running infrared sauna company. We’re super passionate about our clients enjoying the benefits of using infrared saunas – we tailor usage guidelines to each client & their goals and also provide ongoing support too. Here is who can and can’t use saunas and who should consult a doctor before infrared saunas:

Who Can And Can’t Use Infrared Saunas?

When it comes to those who should consult a doctor before infrared saunas we always recommend consulting a healthcare professional if you’re unsure about whether you can use an infrared sauna or if you have an existing condition – especially those with heart conditions or who are prone to bleeding. People who shouldn’t use a sauna include:

  • Those with a chronic condition that reduces your ability to sweat
  • Those suffering from a hangover or who are intoxicated
  • People with a fever
  • Those with insensitivity to heat
  • People with a pacemaker or defibrillator
  • Those on some medication (check with your doctor if taking medication)

Here are some of the questions we get asked often in regards to who can use a sauna:

Can Children Use Saunas?

Children can use saunas but very young children (under 8 years of age) usually aren’t able to regulate heat as efficiently so you need to be mindful of this. Always supervise children in saunas and we advise short sessions with lower temperatures.

Can Elderly Use Saunas?

The elderly can use saunas but we do recommend consulting your doctor and/or exercising caution. Because infrared saunas can help with aches and pains, many elderly people enjoy these health benefits and also the lower, much more comfortable temperatures of infrared saunas over traditional saunas.

Can Overweight People Use Saunas?

Weight loss is one of the most popular reasons people use infrared saunas and are a great option for those wanting to help aid their weight loss. But, a sauna is not a silver bullet solution for weight loss and should always be used in conjunction with a healthy exercise and nutrition routine for best results. Again, if you have any pre-existing conditions we recommend consulting your doctor.

Can People With Implants Use Saunas?

It is safe for people with implants to use infrared saunas but if you experience any discomfort or pain during your sauna session cease using your sauna and seek healthcare advice.
